Porterville (Western Cape)

Situated at the foot of the Olifants River Mountains, Porterville is 155 km northeast of Cape Town and 27 km southeast of Piketberg.

There is very little information on the Jewish population of the town.

Jewish names in Porterville included the Baigel family, Mrs Hallish (who ran the Village Hotel), the Levine and Katze families, Mr. Scholne and the Cohen family (who ran the Commercial Hotel). Jack Diamond was the only Jewish farmer in the district.

There was no congregation or any other formal Jewish institutions.

Figures for 1953 show 50 Jews living in Porterville, Piketberg and Moreesburg. No separate figures are available for Porterville.
