Westminster (Free State)

Westminster is a small village in the Free State, west of Ladybrand.

Westminster had a very small Jewish community. Services were held in private homes or the Jews would travel to Ladybrand or Thaba ‘Nchu to attend synagogue.

Benjamin Malkinson was the managing Director of Wargundy Orchards (Pty) Ltd in Westminster. He bought his own apple farm in the 1940’s and was known as the “Apple King of the Orange Free State”

There are no official census figures for Westminster. Reports from 1955 and 1961 show 20 Jews living in Westminster but by 1964, only nine Jews were reported in the region.
